May 2012 saw We Will Rock You, the ‘jukebox’ musical based on the hits of Queen, celebrate its 10th year at London’s Dominion Theatre. The show’s impressive run has earned itself a place in the top 10 of the West End’s longest running musicals, alongside shows like Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Chicago.
The 10 year anniversary of the show was marked by a gala performance at the Dominion Theatre. The show’s cast was joined onstage by Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor for Bohemian Rhapsody, the show’s finale number. Actor Robert De Niro, a fan of the musical, also made a brief curtain call.
We Will Rock You opened in the Dominion Theatre on 14th May 2002. Despite initially leaving the critics unimpressed, the musical quickly became a firm favourite with audiences. In the years after its release, the show spawned numerous international productions and tours. In 2011, We Will Rock You won the Olivier Audience Award for Best Musical, the only award that’s entirely voted for by the public. Audiences continue to flock to see the show, with nearly 6 million London theatre tickets having been sold for the musical to this day.
With infectious songs, an original storyline and an ever-enthusiastic cast, the popularity of We Will Rock You is set to grow even more in the coming years. Now is the perfect time to grab some cheap theatre tickets and take in this smash hit musical.
